  Music? What does it do?

 

Well!

• It's therapeutic; rejuvenates and refreshes the mind, body, and spirit

• has healing power. The fact is known from the day David played his harp to gravely ill King Saul, if not earlier

• lulls the mind; aids in falling asleep faster-not only babies, but adults and seniors as well

• helps in the production of mono-amines, the neurotransmitters that act within certain brain cells to help regulate movement and emotion (ah!.., that's why athletes are seen wearing 'earphones' before competitions; besides helping them calm down the nerves, they get a boost of energy for the start; especially in sprints and swim races!) "Well begun is half done!",  my friend!

• Also relaxes muscles; improve other brain functions related to creativity

• makes moods and forms the current temperament; helps to dream the esoteric things; strengthen the power of imagination

• improves memory functions, though not recommended in connection with taking the tests or exams

• create an affinity towards, people and things that make music- musicians, musical instruments, elements of nature, birds, and animals

• reduces stress; relieves monotony and lethargy at repetitive work, so much so, the industries allow the assembly line workers and others in similar job situations to wear headphones and listen to their favorite music.

  It has become a usual practice to have music almost everywhere, in waiting rooms, automobiles, airplanes, parks, weddings & funerals, restaurants and places of worship.

  Here, I am tempted to reveal a few of my personal experiences. I was told to stop broadcasting music inside a company run dining hall. It was explained that “it was 'harram' to listen to music while eating”. In another instance, in a job-related work, I was shown into a surgical room while a serious neurosurgical operation using a special microscope was in progress. Loud and boisterous music was being played in the room which really stunned me. (thankfully, the patient was in slumber under anesthesia!) Later, I inquired, how the surgery went on. “The patient is doing fine, just wonderful!” was the firm and reassuring answer. I was admonished a few times by my hostel warden for listening to radio music during study time. “That's why you're so awful in exams!”. He yelled. My roommate, who is always at odds with me, did enjoy and gloat at the reprimand and got good mileage out of the embarrassment meted out to me, to say the least.

​But who can make music?

Everyone, all of us!

-who is prepared and willing to make an earnest attempt at it.

Objective:

​This article is to help people who possess no formal musical education or know very little about it; who are simply eager to learn to sing a pop, film or folk music and do it as fast as possible. Our lives are hectic. We are required to perform many chores, work, duties, and responsibilities. But, we also need fun, entertainment and relaxation as well to have a good healthy balance in life, and wholesome minds.

​This article attempts to provide simple, easy steps to help music enthusiasts to achieve the stated goal!

​The insights provided here must also help in the learning of many other skills and trades too, as there are a lot of similarities among all the processes. Some concepts and keywords are highlighted in colored fonts, which may be further explored by people seeking to further their understanding.

 

This is written with much care, and attention revealing many hidden attributes of music. They are explained in musical, scientific and acoustic terms and meanings. Yet, it is to be treated as a beginner's version of an aspiring singer. Please be reminded that it is not written by a musicologist or music scholar, describing all the in-depth musical theories and intricacies!.

Never the less, it describes essential aspects of music helping to learn singing at a very accelerated pace. The methods described are found to be well-founded and effective.

 

Many characteristics of music, vocal singing and instrument playing are covered in this book. One has to take a graded approach in covering each of them. The same concepts are sometimes explained in different ways to address the needs of wide-ranging music enthusiasts with different backgrounds and goals as well as levels of proficiency.

 

 We do always hear and listen to conversations. We are captivated by political speeches, even when they make little sense; entranced by sermons, although the stories spoken are mythical, esoteric and never seen in life or nature. Children love to hear stories at bedtime. Mothers sing lullabies to their babies. They refresh the mind and body; eases tension; relaxes; lull the minds conducive to a night of blissful sleep. We hear thunder; we shudder and fear; hear a cry, we feel sympathy and perhaps hasten to extend a hand; hear a shout, we become cautious and tense. All sounds carry a sense, impression, information, and effect. There are certain sounds we love to hear, especially when they are sweet-sounding, harmonious, and tuneful. Our minds brighten up; we feel well and wholesome!.

That's music!
