Raagam Sankaraabharanam-Essay
  • Essentially, this is a musical appreciation and a contextual English translation of a South Indian- Carnatic classical music. The song has been made widely popular by its eponymous movie title. It contains the most exciting section of 'singing in solmization' that is clearly articulated in the 'Saptha-swaras'  (the 7 keynotes Sa, Ri, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni) that can be read both in English & Malayalam.

The ragam called Sankaraabharanam, besides its exquisite composition, is also praised for its divine connection, inspiration, devotion to the deities as well as the spiritualism and philosophy of the Veda 'Advaithm" and the three cardinal virtues. The word and the name "Sankaabharanam" itself means several other closely related things. Like me, the public seemed to be often confused about all the different references and aspects contained in the music such as the song, ragam,  Aabharanam (the ornaments) the idol of Lord Sankara is seen wearing. This essay, among many other things, clears out some doubts and misconceptions providing an accurate account of its true meaning. Along the way, we could discover the depth, beauty, and magnificence of the ragam.

The 9-page essay describes several other aspects highlighted in this song: 'spiritualism' & 'materialism'; 'worldliness'; 'idealism' & 'pragmatism'; heaven & nature; good & evil. The article describes some main features and characteristics of Carnatic music helpful to Western music lovers and for all the music enthusiasts to appreciate. One can perceive some traditionally existing dichotomy or disjunct between the East & the West in thoughts & traditions on the one hand, and the striking similarities and conjunct natures on the other. Unity and diversity are omnipresent. That's our world!!      for digital download only!     p: 9
