Pampa Nadiye!
  • The Poem in Malayalam

Pampa is a river running across most of Central Travancore region in Kerala, ultimately joining in the vast and magnificent Vembanadu lake which in turn flows into the Arabian sea on the West coast of India.

On both sides of its sprawling banks, many little townships, schools, and places of worship have sprung up similar to that along the Danube river which flows from the Western to Eastern Europe falls into the Black sea. The most fitting title should have been "on the banks of the river Pampa"

The Malayalam Lyrics is written as an 'art song' to help Malayalees sing this beautiful waltz "Danube waves /Donauwellen" by the Romanian composer Josif  Ivanovichi. I could relate to the song very well, as I grew up in a tiny, waterlogged hamlet in Kuttanadu on the banks of the river. The song always brings to my nostalgic memories of childhood, the simple, carefree life, which over the course of life have changed in drastically unrecognizable ways.

The song has a mellifluous, fluid movement similar to the flow of the river itself in its long path; climbing, descending, regrouping, changing tides, currents, and in its meandering course. I find it quite enjoyable to play it and like to share with others the beauty and wonders of nature along with the equally delectable tune. It had no words. I had to search for words to suit the tune as good as I could. A few film music composers have not-so-successfully tried to adopt the tune for accordion in a Hindi movie, Hur Dil Jo Pyar Karega!.

The music is highlighted in the book "The First Concert" with elaborate descriptions. The book itself is worth reading for a lot of other reasons. It covers a vast array of subject topics in scientific, life-related facts, multi-media, technical, and musical details with novel-like drama and suspense.
